International German Biochar Forum 2024: Leading Experts Discuss the Role of Biochar in Sustainable Corporate Strategies
Berlin - The German Biochar Forum returns to Berlin on November 18 and 19, 2024, bringing together leading minds from academia, industry, and politics to discuss "How to apply biochar in sustainability management and accounting."
Biochar is at the heart of these discussions. Benedikt Zimmermann, Chairman of German Biochar e.V., highlights the significance of this technology: “Thanks to biochar, we can permanently store CO2 absorbed by plants from the atmosphere. The best part is that this technology is already proven and can be quickly scaled.”
Biochar plays a central role in developing a sustainable bioeconomy. In this context, biochar is produced from agricultural residues and other biomass resources that would otherwise remain unused or be burned, thus causing CO2 emissions. Converting this biomass into biochar and applying it to soils not only binds carbon long-term but also enhances soil fertility and water retention capacity. This promotes a circular economy by turning waste products into valuable resources. Overall, biochar carbon removal supports a bioeconomy focused on sustainability, resource efficiency, and carbon reduction while offering both ecological and economic benefits.
The forum will focus on how Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) can be an integral part of a sustainable climate strategy as a negative emissions technology. Special attention will be given to developing methods for the comparability, accounting, and integration of biochar into relevant national and corporate strategies. This is a crucial step towards a sustainable bioeconomy.
Since its establishment in 2017, German Biochar e.V. has organized conferences under the name German Biochar Forum, which have become the leading independent professional event in the German-speaking region. The two-day forum, which is being organized this year in cooperation with the International Biochar Initiative (IBI), offers a platform for expert lectures, panel discussions, interactive workshops, poster sessions, and an exhibition area for sponsors.
Media representatives are cordially invited to report on the German Biochar Forum 2024 and participate in the event. Accreditations and further information on registration are available on the forum’s official website.
